At the legendary club 7 he joined up with some musicians and in 1966 they started the Sapphires, the first norwegian soul/R&B band. They performed at club 7 and soon got a record deal with Polydor. They recorded three singles between 1966 and 1967, "Don't Play That Song/Midnight hour" (released as Little Earl and The Sapphires), "I can't believe it / Night tripper's jerk" and! "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/Out of sight". They were backing band for Wenche Myhre on the 1968 single "Love A Go-Go".They toured in Germany in 1966 and were amongst the first soul/R&B artists to perform there. The Sapphires disbanded in 1968 and many of the musicians from The Sapphires continued to play music in different constellations. Tom Karlsen joined the rock group "the Dream".
