At the legendary club 7 he joined up with some musicians and in 1966 they started the Sapphires, the first norwegian soul/R&B band. They performed at club 7 and soon got a record deal with Polydor. They recorded three singles between 1966 and 1967, "Don't Play That Song/Midnight hour" (released as Little Earl and The Sapphires), "I can't believe it / Night tripper's jerk" and! "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/Out of sight". They were backing band for Wenche Myhre on the 1968 single "Love A Go-Go".They toured in Germany in 1966 and were amongst the first soul/R&B artists to perform there.
